God’s justice is always tempered with mercy, and the goal of God’s justice is always restoration, not destruction. It is Christ’s forgiveness that is supposed to enable us to forgive ourselves and others, and his forgiveness which also calls us to forgive ourselves and others as well, hard though that may be.
