Songs of Joy

Even before Jesus is born, Mary sings with joy a song praising God for things God has done, like filling the hungry with good things and helping Israel. She also points to the Messianic agenda that Jesus himself would later affirm with his Sermon on the Mount: God was going to turn the expectations of the world upside down. God was going to lift up the lowly and topple the powerful; God was going to feed the hungry and let the rich go away empty. Except Mary does not say, “was going to,” she says that God already did.
