About the Event

When Jesus gathered his early followers, sat them down on the mountain side, and gave them their first lesson, WHAT did these followers expect to hear from Jesus? What was on Jesus’ mind? As we gather in Advent around the ideas of expectation, anticipation and hope, we, as Christians, have the story of Jesus’ birth, life, death and resurrection, and how he lived out the identity of “God with us.” But those earliest followers sitting on that mountain did not yet have the certainty of this narrative. What did they think Jesus was going to say to them in that first lesson according to Matthew’s Gospel? As we gather in Advent, what do we hear in the words of the Beatitudes? Let’s imagine it’s the first time we are hearing these words.
