music_and_worshipMusic is an integral part of all the worship services at Prince of Peace.

At 9am on Sunday morning POPmusic leads the congregational singing with a variety of folk and contemporary types of music. Started in 2003, POPmusic is a group of singers and musicians who lead music during the 9AM informal worship service each Sunday. The group also leads music during the Christmas Eve service at 11PM. POPmusic performs a variety of music, including: praise, folk, spirituals, traditional hymns, and occasionally an instrumental number. Singers and musicians are always welcome.

At the 11 am service the organ and piano lead congregational singing from the Presbyterian Hymnal. Choral octavos, preludes and responses express a full range of musical periods and styles. Additional music is provided by our five octave, four chime handbell choirs and instrumentalists from within the congregation, both youth and adult. During the Christmas season of Advent the Adult Choir and Sunday School children present a cantata and pageant on two separate Sundays. Christmas Eve the Senior Choir and Bells lead the service at 7 pm. The 9 pm service music is more subdued accompanied by guitar and piano. PoP music leads the music at the 11 pm Communion Service. This year the Senior Choir will present Hal Hopson’s “Sing Noel” on December 13 at 11 am. The children’s pageant “The Living Creche” will be given at 10 am on December 20. Several children of the church will be playing their musical instruments as part of this service.

In addition to our regularly scheduled church choirs, Prince of Peace also has two ecumenical groups. The Prince of Peace Ecumenical Traveling Choir was established in 1997. During the past 12 years the choir has participated in numerous choral festivals as well as traveling on customized singing tours. In 1997 the choir sang in an International Choral Festival in Vienna, Austria, as part of the Advent Season. Another Choral Festival was in Verona, Italy in 2001. In 2003 the choir took a customized choral trip to England and Scotland. 2004 was a stateside festival in Stowe Vermont. In 2005, the choir returned to Italy to sing in an International Festival in Montecatini. In 2006 we sang in the Southern New England Festival in Boston Mass. Autumn of 2008 the choir planned a customized choral trip to Germany, including concerts in Leipzig, Halle, Dresden and Berlin. Plans are currently underway to sing in an International Festival in Barcelona, Spain, in October 2010. Membership in the Ecumenical choir is open to all interested singers. We represent approximately 7 different churches. Rehearsals are usually Saturday mornings. The choir goes caroling to shut-ins each December and sings in various convalescent facilities throughout the year. December 12 we will be combining with the Boyles Memorial Ringers of Prince of Peace singing and ringing at the Patuxent Nursery on Route301 in Bowie at 2 pm.

Our newly formed Belle Nouveau is a group of beginning bell ringers who rehearse on Wednesday from 1 to 2 pm in the sanctuary. All interested bell ringers are invited to attend. This group is open to anyone in the community and will focus on ringing in assisted living and convalescent centers preferably during the daytime.

The weekly rehearsal schedule is as follows:

  • 7-7:30 pm Nova Ringers (open to all, children fourth grade and up)

Inspiration

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. (James 1:2-4)
